Description
Offers a 2-day training opportunity to communities, agencies, and organizations seeking to enhance their capacity to provide training in trauma-informed responses to providers working with individuals involved in the criminal justice system. Develops local trainers who can deliver SAMHSA GAINS Center's "How Being Trauma-Informed Improves Criminal Justice System Responses" curriculum to justice system professionals, law enforcement, and mental health and substance use disorder (SUD) providers and peers.
What This Program Offers
Training will include the following activities and objectives:
- 4-hour training presenting the How Being Trauma-Informed Improves Criminal Justice System Responses curriculum
- 4-hour training discussion and review of the design, purpose, objectives, and goals of the curriculum
- Activities to introduce, develop, and enhance training, facilitation, and public speaking skills with participants
- Assistance to familiarize training participants with available tools and resources, including an online trainer portal, publications, and topical resources on trauma and trauma-informed responses
- Connection with peer trainers for ongoing support, collaboration, and dialogue regarding trauma-informed responses and community-based training opportunities
Who Can Receive Services from This Program
The target audience for the training includes:
- Criminal justice system professionals such as reentry staff, drug court personnel, and community corrections officers
- Law enforcement officers including Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) trainers
- Mental health and substance use disorder (SUD) treatment service providers who work with adults involved in the criminal justice system
Training site applicant organizations are responsible for selecting up to 20 participants for the training event. Participants may be from a single county, region, or state, and may come from outside the training site community.
Trainings will take place between January and August 2025 and may be held in either in-person or virtual formats. Preference will be given to sites that:
- Have not previously completed the training
- Work in or provide training to drug court or reentry program staff
- Serve marginalized and/or underserved populations
