Description

Offers jails with established medication-assisted treatment (MAT) programs the opportunity to apply to become a mentor site to provide peer-to-peer mentoring to other jails interested in establishing or expanding MAT programs to better meet the needs of individuals in jail with substance use disorders (SUD).

What This Program Offers

For the Jail-Based MAT Mentor Site Initiative, mentors will:

  • Serve as mentor sites for 2 years, beginning in or around late spring/early summer 2024
  • Serve as hosts for similar facilities interested in planning and implementing an MAT program for individuals within their jails
  • Host 2 or 3 peer-to-peer exchange visits to support the mentor program each year for the life of the grant
  • Provide opportunities for observation, peer-to-peer exchanges, and other technical assistance during mentor site visits
  • Share procedures and experiences in building a MAT program
  • Act as a resource to the mentees throughout the 2 year initiative

Who Can Receive Services from This Program

Jails with established MAT programs are eligible to apply to become a mentor site. A priority focus will be given to:

  • Rural jails
  • Jails offering all 3 forms of U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved medications for opioid user disorder (OUD)
  • Jails providing evidence-based treatment to racially and ethnically diverse populations
  • Jails with innovative program models

Jails in any local jurisdiction interested in establishing or expanding MAT programs are eligible to apply as a mentee site.

Application

The mentor application closed February 9, 2024.

Jails with programming specifically targeted to pretrial detainees will receive additional points in the mentor application scoring.

Mentors sites will be offered $2,000 stipend for costs related to providing mentoring services and assistance.

Assistance is provided to mentees at no cost. The mentee application is available online and applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
