Purpose

Provides funding to 4-H programs to expand mentoring services for justice-involved youth, youth at-risk of juvenile justice involvement, and rural youth. Aims to reduce risk factors, such as poor school attendance, school failure, and alcohol and substance use, by engaging the target population in 4-H programming that promotes healthy youth development. Supports one-on-one, group, peer, or a combination of mentoring approaches to provide youth with opportunities for civic engagement, life skills, meaningful relationships, mentoring, and employment skills. Helps connect youth with additional services and supports, including:

  • Mental health
  • Educational support
  • Career guidance
  • Coaching
  • Mentorship to assist with transition to adulthood

Award ceiling: $308,333
Project period: 3 years
Estimated number of awards: 6
Estimated total program funding: $1,900,000

One award of $358,333 will be made to a single applicant to implement an evidence-based mentoring project and a 2-day Mentoring at Risk and Rural Youth (MARRY) Project Director Meeting in the Washington, DC area.

Who Can Apply

Eligibility is limited to Cooperative Extensions at Land-grant College or University, including 1862, 1890, and 1994 Institutions.
