Purpose

Provides funding for loan repayment for certain healthcare providers in exchange for service commitments at Indian Health Service (IHS) facilities serving American Indian and Alaska Native communities. Priority is given to individuals serving at facilities with the greatest staffing needs in specific health professions, including primary care and behavioral health.

Amount of Funding

A maximum of $50,000 for 2 years of full-time clinical practice at an IHS-approved facility. After the initial 2-year commitment, participants can extend their contract on an annual basis.

Who Can Apply

Applicants must work full time in an approved health profession discipline to be eligible for this program and meet the following requirements:

  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Be registered for selective service, for male applicants 18 years or older
  • Have a health profession degree or are in your final year of academic/post-graduate clinical training
  • Have a valid license to practice
  • Be committed to practice at an Indian health facility
  • Be able to begin service on or before September 30 for 2 continuous years of full-time clinical practice

Health profession students in their final year of post-graduate clinical training/school are eligible to apply before obtaining a license. However, applicants are not eligible for an award until they can provide proof of licensure. Service obligations must begin by September 30 of the fiscal year in which the LRP contract is signed.

Funding priority is given to individuals serving at facilities with the greatest staffing needs in specific health disciplines. Additional information on facility site rankings is available on the program website.

Additional priority is given to applicants who are members of federally recognized American Indian and Alaska Native tribes or who are IHS Scholarship Program recipients.
