Federal Transit Administration (FTA)

Purpose

Provides formula funding to states and designated recipients to help meet the transportation needs of older adults and individuals with disabilities, including those with a drug addiction that limits major life activities. Supports the development and implementation of transportation services to enhance mobility in the following areas:

  • Large urbanized areas with over 200,000 residents
  • Small urbanized areas with populations between 50,000 and 200,000 people
  • Rural areas with fewer than 50,000 residents

Section 5310 funds may be used for:

  • Buses and vans
  • Lifts, ramps, and securement devices for wheelchairs
  • Transportation technology systems, such as scheduling, routing, and one-call systems
  • Mobility management programs
  • Securing transit services through a contract, lease, or other arrangement
  • Travel training
  • Programs for volunteer drivers
  • Constructing paths, such as curb-cuts or sidewalks, to make bus stops more accessible
  • Creating pedestrian signals or other features that are easily accessed
  • Enhancing signage or way-finding technology
  • Vehicles for new and accessible programs related to taxis, ride sharing, and/or van pooling

Amount of Funding

Project period: 3 years

FTA uses a formula to award funds to states and designated recipients.

Who Can Apply

Eligible direct recipients include:

  • States and designated recipients for urbanized areas over 200,000 in population
  • States for rural and small urbanized areas under 200,000 in population
  • Federally recognized Indian tribes

Eligible subrecipients for Section 5310 projects include:

  • State or local governmental authorities
  • Private nonprofit organizations
  • Operators of public transportation
